ST. LOUIS — Close to a dozen tornado warnings were reported in the greater St. Louis area as a strong line of storms and unstable air raced through the area, knocking out power and doing damage to multiple buildings.

There were reports of close to 100,000 buildings without power, including 51,000 in St. Louis County.

Traffic was totally blocked on I-44 near Villa Ridge after a tractor trailer overturned. Another semi-truck also on I-44 by MO-66 and MO-100 was completely flipped upside down.

The storms had largely moved through the central and eastern Missouri area by 10 pm, though Illinois counties were still in harm's way at that time.

5 On Your Side crews are out and will be sending in reports as soon as conditions are safe to do so.

An NWS meteorologist earlier in the day issued a warning of a "life-threatening situation" from the storms, which could spawn tornadoes, some of them strong.

The timing for the St. Louis area includes storms entering the western portion of the viewing area around 6pm and entering the metro area between 8 and 10 pm.
